Why You Need To Make MORE Mistakes!

by Caleb Lee on May 14, 2009

thomas-edisonIf you wanna be overall more successful in life … more happy … more excited about getting up every morning and living an amazing life — then you need to start making MORE mistakes!

The LIE Most People Believe

All throughout our school days we’re taught to be afraid of mistakes … to watch what we’re doing … to make sure we never make any mistakes (check, double check and when the rubber meets the road — play it safe!)

That mistakes meant you did something wrong. Or were something to be ashamed of. Heck, all academic tests are based on the idea of avoiding mistakes.

But in the real world, it’s not that way at ALL!

Success Secret of The High Achievers …

My good friend Daniel Levis says in his excellent article, Perpetuate Your Success …:

“Babe Ruth is widely acknowledged as the greatest baseball player of all time.

He was also one of the game’s biggest screw-ups — striking out more than just about any other player in the history of baseball.

Contradiction? Nope.

The Babe was near invincible in his time, simply because he was willing to risk more than anybody else dared to.

And because he risked more, naturally he failed more, as well.”

You see, in order to hit one out of the park every once in a while, you’ve got to swing and MISS a lot — but it’s OK!

Re-Define Your View On Mistakes!

One of the benefits of being a human — a concious one at least — is that nothing by itself has any value. We, as the people who live our lives, get to assign a value to everything that happens to us or any of our situations.

So mistakes by themselves are not bad … unless … we label them that!

So what you need to do is re-define your view of mistakes from “bad” to “GOOD!”. Why? Because then you won’t be afraid to take more risks … to try more new things … to KEEP trying because you’ll understand mistakes are normal, ok and even to be looked forward to!

Scientists Call It Testing!

Scientists aren’t afraid of making mistakes. They call it “testing” because they’re always testing their hypothesis’ (theories) to see if they’re correct.

They think:

“I’m guessing this is how you might cure this disease, lets test it, and if it doesn’t work (or if it does) we’ll go from there!”

And your life should be one big scientific experiment too!

Edison’s Definition of Mistakes

It’s said Edison made over 2,998 mistakes in trying to invent the light bulb. That he tried and FAILED 999 times before he created one successfully.

From the LA Times:

“Before that magical moment in October 1879, Edison had worked out no fewer than 3,000 theories about electric light, each of them reasonable and apparently likely to be true — but in only two cases did his experiments work.”

It’s said that when someone asked Edison if all those mistakes discouraged him, he replied:

“I’ve not failed 3,000 times, I’ve just gotten 3,000 steps closer to finding out what works!”

Here’s some other GENIUS quotes from ole Edison:

Have you started on a path of improving yourself, then gave up before you got there because the going got tough? Here’s what Edison woulda told you:

“Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.”

Do you want to know what your greatest weakness is? What ALL of our greatest weakness is?

“”Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time.”

And finally, this is a great way of looking at mistakes:

“Just because something doesn’t do what you planned it to do doesn’t mean it’s useless.”

Because like Edison said, most all of our mistakes are just a LEARNING process — teaching us 1.) what doesn’t work and 2.) giving us a clue as to what might work next time!

What Are You Not Doing Because You’re Afraid Of Making A Mistake?

What great thing are you putting off in your life because you’re afraid of making a mistake(s)?

  • Wanna get a new job but afraid you’ll fail at a new one … or fail at even finding one?
  • Wanna get in a new relationship … but afraid you’ll get rejected when you start talking to the opposite sex?
  • Wanna start going to the gym more … but afraid you’ll look “dumb” working out?
  • Wanna start eating right, but afraid your friends will ridicule you because you’re trying to change yourself?

These are common fears all stemming from the fact that you’re looking at mistakes in the wrong way. So here’s the solution:

1. Redefine your view on mistakes. Now, look forward to them because they’re getting you closer to your goal.

2. Just Do It!

Keep plowing ahead towards your goals … pay attention to your mistakes — not to feel bad about them but because they’ll teach you valuable lessons about what doesn’t work for you & what might work next time … and keep plowing forward and your success in virtually everything is GUARANTEED!
