Turn Your Nervous Energy Into Power!

Did you know that you should actually EMBRACE being uncomfortable, instead of trying to avoid it … if … you want to get better at virtually every part of your life?

It’s true. Much like I pointed out in my post about how you need to get out of your comfort zones … you’ll never really achieve anything of much merit if you never push yourself out of your comfort zones.

Remember:

“The problem is: if you want something. Anything. You need to change. To change, you are in effect going to have to reach out past your comfort zones.

When you start doing this, it’s going to be uncomfortable, no doubt about it.

But it’s NECESSARY if you’re going to achieve anything worthwhile in your life.”

Your Success Is Directly Proportional To Your Ability To Embrace Discomfort

It’s true. Every time you try to change your current situation — you’re going to get internal resistance because it means you’re reaching out of your comfort zones … you are going to feel uncomfortable.

The important thing to remember is to embrace this … to not run away from this … instead of trying to fight it–look forward to it because it means two things:

  1. You’re reaching far out enough to actually be doing something worthwhile …
  2. You know if you keep pushing the discomfort will eventually fade …

But you don’t want the discomfort to TOTALLY fade … here’s the thing …

Embracing Discomfort Can Actually HELP You

There are a lot of movie stars who STILL after many years in the business have to throw up backstage before they step foot in front of a camera.

The “nervous jitters”, or being uncomfortable, actually help get them in a “hyper focused” state when they perform. It’s as if it “supercharges” their performance.

Here’s why: the nervous energy you feel, or the discomfort you feel — physically — in your body is actually misplaced energy. And if you learn how to “tap into” this misplaced energy and direct it towards your performance — it can actually help you!

How To Redirect Uncomfortable Energy To Supercharge Your “Performance” …

It all starts with your breathing.

The next time you’re feeling tense, check in with your body. You’ll notice you’re breathing shallow, from the top of your chest and maybe even at a more rapid rate (your heart may be pounding).

Here’s how to channel it:

  1. Recognize the uncomfort and instead of freaking out cause you feel this way, decide it’s OK …
  2. Draw a DEEP breath in through your nose — as much air as possible — and send it as deep down into your belly as possible …
  3. Hold the air in your belly temporarily …
  4. Squeeze your lips together and blow it all out forcefully …
  5. Repeat a couple times …

Just doing this simple breathing practice will center you in what you’re doing, it’ll take your energy from high up in your chest and bring it down into a more controllable place in your body … and then you just need to go on doing what you’re doing and whenever you feel like you’re getting “out of control” — repeat steps 1-5.

You can do this if you’re about to give a presentation and get nervous … if you’re in a social situation and start to feel anxiety … if you’re about to approach a member of the opposite sex … if you’re fighting with your girlfriend/boyfriend … you can do it in any situation where you need to harness that energy and use it to make your “performance” better!

Instead of Avoiding It–Embrace It.

So the point being, you can’t really achieve anything worthwhile without getting out of your comfort zones so not only must you accept this fact, but you should go ahead and fully embrace it too because a lot of times, the energy you’re feeling can be redirected into your body to help yourself perform more optimally.
