The One Big Secret To Achieving Anything You Want In Life!

by Caleb Lee on June 18, 2009

be-consistentToday I’m going to share with you the biggest secret there is to getting in shape, looking great, achieving your goals, or accomplishing practically ANYTHING!

Hype? Over-Promising? Not at all!

This is the one big secret that men and women who have accomplished great things … defied the odds … broke through the barriers … and became super successful ALL use.

Want to know what it is?

It’s ALL About Consistency!

Consistency is sticking to a course of action and staying that course of action, over and over again. It’s not giving up. It’s continuing to do what’s working (even if it’s only working a wee little bit!)

Woody Allen, during the high point of his career in Hollywood was quoted as saying:

“80 percent of success is just showing up” — Woody Allen

I was reading an interview with Jay Leno, and they were asking him why he enjoyed such a long career as a comedian, here’s what he said (I’m paraphrasing from memory):

“Success is easy if you can make it past seven years. Most comedians get tired of their own act before seven years. They get tired of the audience laughing at them before that. They resent the audience, so they change their act or quit. If you can make it past seven years though, it’s like everyone has to take notice–it’s inevitable.”

That’s definitely not word-for-word what he said, but you get the point right?

Consistency is key!

But could it really be that simple? Is it really that EASY to succeed? If it was just a matter of continuing to “plug away” — wouldn’t EVERYONE have achieved their goals by now?

Most People Are NOT Consistent!

In fact, commercial gyms count on this fact — it’s how they make all their money. They make their money by signing up more new members than their gym size can actually hold because they know that not all the members will go there at once … and more importantly … that the vast majority of them will be gone after just a few months!

They’ll keep paying their gym memberships and never go back to the gym.

Seems crazy doesn’t it? But it happens every day.

It’s the same thing with most people that get started with business opportunities. Because there’s a learning curve to EVERYTHING — it sometimes takes a while to get a business profitable (heck, isn’t the statistic a couple YEARS for most small businesses?) but most people won’t keep going past the first failure.

Most people hit resistance and go — “NOPE! It won’t work! This is a scam!” Even though most of those biz opp, “opportunities” are actually based on legitamite ideas and while you may not get rich overnight — if you kept at it — you’d probably see at least a few bucks.

Train Yourself To Be Consistent!

I guess we all have to fight that inner voice that argues with us every morning, “stay in bed — just a little while longer!” or that calls us to go watch T.V. instead of going outside for a walk … or playing with the kids … or calling up long time friends.

It’s just a fact of life.

But the good news is — EVERYTHING is Learnable AND everything is Trainable. One of my favorite scenes in movies is when Denzel Washington’s character in “Man on Fire” tells the little girl he is protecting: “There’s no such thing as tough, there’s only trained and untrained!”

And this is so true! You’re either trained to be consistent or you’re untrained! In the end, motivation really has NOTHING to do with it.

Keep At It, Just Keep Showing Up.

Like Woody Allen said, “just keep showing up”. If you’re building consistency with exercise — make sure you just keep showing up.

If you read my article Dieting Help 101 then you know that it really only takes 28 days to establish a new habit. So just be a “nazi” with yourself when it comes to discipline that first month — don’t let yourself take “no” as an answer.

Keep at it, VERY consistently, for those first 28 days — and it’ll get a lot easier after that I promise.

I knew a guy that had trouble being consistent going to the gym, so here’s what he did: He made a promise to himself that no matter what, even if he was deathly ill from the flue or something (and he actually WAS at one point) — on days he was supposed to work out — he would go to the gym and at least step through the door. No matter what.

Even when he got REALLY sick, he still got in his car, drove to the gym and walked across the threshhold. Why? Because he was building consistency — he was training his mind AND his body to perform in the way he wanted it to — no matter what the outside circumstances would dictate.

It worked for him and it’ll work for you too.

So, above all, be consistent!

Was having a conversation the other day with a guy at the powerlifting gym and we were both agreeing that all though most people work out stupidly … do the wrong things in the gym … or even do dangerous things … the important thing is that they’re doing them.

Even though you might do 80% of the things wrong — if you’re consistent at something for a couple years (certainly if it’s more than 7 years like Jay Leno said!) — you’re going to get proficient and experience a small level of success at anything.

And proficiency turns to good, good turns to great, and great becomes expert or excellent. So now you know the one big secret to achieving anything you want in life — I hope you put it to use today :)
