If you wanna achieve a big goal, a lot of times you’re going to be faced with setbacks. A lot of times, you’re going to make mistakes.
And this is perfectly normal. The key is to not give up, to stay committed to your goal and keep moving ahead.
But …
“The Definition Of Insanity Is Doing The Same Thing Over and Over and Hoping For Different Results!”
I’m sure you’ve heard this, and it’s pretty much accurate in my estimation. So if you’re facing mistakes, setbacks, difficulties and such on the way to your goal — the best thing to do is NOT to just keep trying the same approach.
Sometimes you’ll have to switch approaches until you find out what works …
Better yet, is to break down the process whereby you’re achieving your goal (or more importantly: someone else already has used!) and figure out where in the process you’re going wrong.
Reverse Engineer Success and Copy That Sucka!
Let’s look at getting a lean, sexy body for example …
You pick someone who you know has started in a similar situation as you, with similar genetics and has gone on to build a lean, sexy body.
There’s obviously two components to building a lean, sexy body — two parts to the process:
- Diet
- Exercise
So you start copying what this person did to get their results, but you find you’re not getting into the shape you want fast enough.
Break It Down!
So start with the diet part, start asking yourself some questions to try to figure out a new approach:
- Am I following a diet that will work for me? That worked for that guy?
- Maybe I should keep track of exactly how many calories I’m eating for just the next three weeks — just to make SURE I’m actually following it as strictly as I thought I was
- Let me go and find out exactly what he did again, to make sure I didn’t miss anything …
- And so on and so forth …
Then your diet is handled, but you’re not getting strong, you’re not getting bigger, etc. You move on to exercise to try to figure out what the problem is there and start brainstorming some new approaches.
You’ll Figure It Out, If You Break It Down Small Enough!
Don’t be afraid to try breaking down your problem into even smaller parts. In the example above, you have diet and exercise, but it might not be that simple.
For example:
- Exercise gets broken down to … am I working out enough/too much? Doing the right exercises? Intensely enough? etc … keep trying new approaches!
- Diet gets broken down to … am I eating the right foods? Eating enough/too much of them? etc
You just keep breaking down the equation to smaller parts and “testing” changes to each little part, until you find out what works.
Most People Give Up WAY TOO EARLY!
You see, most people don’t like failure. They don’t know that mistakes are a part of success … so they get discouraged and give up way too early.
Like Edison said:
“Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.”
When Edison encountared a setback with his inventions, he didn’t give up on the idea … he just said “hmm … maybe I should change my approach?”
So if you’re trying hard to reach a goal and you’re not quite there, don’t forget to change your approach and don’t even think about quitting!
