Quick, Healthy Snacks

by Caleb Lee on March 3, 2009

quick-healthy-snacksBecause everyone is getting busier and busier these days, I want to throw out a couple of ideas for quick, healthy snacks to help you if you find yourself having to “eat on the run”.

Also, I know the “trouble” times for a lot of people are right when they get home from work, before dinner and they’re snacking mindlessly on basically crap and wondering where all the extra pounds are coming from. Or even after dinner while they’re sitting in front of the T.V.

Most people just grab whatever they can get their hands on and decide to eat that when they’re in a rush or want a snack. Potatoe chips, candy bars, fast food whatever. But you don’t have to eat unhealthy foods just because you find yourself short on time. Here’s a few ideas.

Nuts

Nuts are a pretty good choice for a healthy snack. They have a lot of fat so you’ll feel full longer. They have some protein. Overall, they’re a better choice for you that potatoe chips or something else like that.

Raw Almonds are probably the best kind for you (in my opinion). Although it’s good to cycle through them all and enjoy all the different tastes and variaties.

Try to stay closer to the “raw” varieties of these nuts and away from the roasted ones with added “flavor” powders (they’ll often be coated with stuff to make them taste “better”).

Veggies

I’m not a big veggie eater, but I am a fan of carrots and broccoli. Broccoli isn’t usually one of those “snack” things for me because I prefer it steamed, but I will munch out on some carrots and they make a good little snack. Get your bugs bunny on!

Peppers!

If I can get my hands on red or green peppers and get them sliced up into little strips those are pretty good to munch on. To tell you the truth, I don’t really know why peppers are healthier for you than potatoe chips but I’m betting they are :)

Avocados

I really LOVE avocados. They’re so darn good. Lots of fiber. Lots of fat. You’ll feel full longer, and they’re really good for you too. I’ll throw guacamole in here with avocados because they’re basically the same thing (with a few extra ingredients) — just watch what you’re dipping in there amigo!

Pork Rinds

This is a new favorite of mine. Zero carbs and it fulfills that “potatoe chip” need in you. Plus it’s got a lot of fat. I hear it’s a favorite of people on the Atkins diet because it’s no carbs. I really like the hot and spicy variety.

This will blow your mind: You can grind up pork rinds and use them like flour for ANY dish you wanna cook that requires bread. Think about that for a moment. It blew my mind when my friend made meatloaf with pork rinds…

Cheeses

Are pretty good for you. They’re pretty low carb, have a good amount of protein and fat. Calcium. I like snacking on these bad boys too if I’m at a party or something and they have those trays.

I like the spicy ones, but I’m not sure how healthy they are, if it’s spiced with natural peppers and whatnot it’s probably pretty good for ya but who knows.

Celery Sticks

I dont’ even eat these because I’m just not that into them, but I know a lot of people who like to snack on them. The upside is they’re really fibrous and apparently they’re negative calorie. Meaning your body actually uses more calories to digest them than is in the food. So can’t go wrong there.

Alright, so that’s about it, I just wanted to give you a idea of some quick, healthy snacks as they came into my head this morning. Got any you wanna add? Leave them in the comments.
