Every year around this time (the beginning of the year) a bunch of skinny guys decide that this is finally going to be the year they put on some muscle and build a body they’d be proud to show off at the beach… a body that will make women swoon.

Since they don’t know what to do, they go looking for advice. That’s the good news. The bad news?

They (and probably you!) are looking in all the wrong places!

Skinny guys go straight to the magazine rack at the grocery store. They pick up muscle building and bodybuilding magazines and start reading the articles.

They see a huge, 300lb professional bodybuilding master who shares his workout secrets and they think, “if he gets results like this from his routine — then I should do the very same thing and I will get the same results!”

Now normally, this process of “modeling” success is a great way to achieve your goals. Set a goal. Find someone who did it before you. And copy what they did to get the same results. Sounds simple right?

But pros are NOT natural!

Here’s the thing: professional bodybuilders are not training naturally! What do I mean? They’re on the juice, roids, anabolic steroids… which means two things:

  1. They can recover from super long workouts
  2. They make progress more easily than you

And another thing…

Pros’ were born with natural muscle building genetics!

Don’t believe me? The first time Jay Cutler (a current bodybuilding olympia champion) stepped in the gym at age 18 he bench pressed 300lbs. Three hundred pounds with no previous training, other than being born with naturally good genetics, being big by nature and growing up on a farm doing hard work.

What’s this got to do with you? Everything…

You need natural muscle building secrets

The first step is to stop reading all the magazines. Stop looking at what mr. universe/olympia/steroid pumped up bodybuilder guy is doing and focus on what has worked for guys like you for years (even before steroids were ever created).

You gotta keep things simple…

The first thing you need to focus on is doing all the big, compound lifts. This means they use more than one muscle at a time. Squats, deadlifts, Pullups, Bench Presses, Overhead presses, etc… notice I put squats and deads at the front of the list and not the bench press? There’s a reason for that.

Get on a good plan like the DoubleYourGains’ 3-5 program that has you doing full body workouts 3x per week. Start getting strong on these exercises.

Eat a LOT

If you want to build muscle, you gotta learn how to eat. If you’re naturally skinny, chances are you have a fast metabolism so you need to eat, eat more, then eat some more. Drink milk.

This doesn’t mean eating a bunch of potatoe chips and bon bons, that won’t help you build much muscle, read my article’s on eating clean and when you feel stuffed and think “I can’t eat another bite” think of how big you want to get and shovel down some more food.

Ready, fire, aim and keep going

You’re not going to get everything right your first month training. That’s ok. Keep going. Keep training, keep improving your technique, learning more about building muscle (from no b.s. guys like me and my blog and NOT magazines) and keep going.

Set your goals high, don’t let anyone tell you it’s impossible and get to work. Yes, I said it, that four letter word — work. Squat, Deadlift, train hard and eat and you’ll start growing.

Good article and so true. I am so sick of BB magazines and site promoting useless crap to people who are basically not getting the whole story….or just being sold on some supplements. Lift heavy, eat, sleep. I think you could add another step, stay off muscle building forums and chat rooms until you can learn how to put weight on by doing compound movements and eating enough….otherwise people spend hours debating the little things that bring nothing in return…when they need to master the basics first. Keep up the great writing.

Nobody who posts a video of themselves squatting over 500lbs wants to hear your lame ass talk about how bad their form is…

“you culd be gtn bettr definytion n’ ur thighs if u point ur toes out b/c I red it n’ mussel n’ fitness this mnth!!!!”

And it’s always the “arm chair” experts who can’t even lift their own bodyweight (in any lift) who post these idiotic comments to videos on youtube.

Lesson? posting youtube comments and giving unsolicited advice with third grade spelling skills absolutely MURDERS any chance you will ever have to get big, strong or ripped :)
