So for the past few nights I’ve had a tickle in my throat threatening to be something more… I ignored it and continued on yesterday with my workout, work, etc and went to bed.
Woke up this morning to God awful HELL. Whatever I had made it into my chest and is making me cough up a bunch of crap and keeping me feel like crap.
I’m not pleased.
“Pride Comes Before a Fall”
I’ve already had my “once yearly” visit of Strep throat and normally I brag that my one-time per year visit of this throat virus is the only time I get sick. I’m usually healthy, viril and ready to go.
I went back to bed after checking some email this morning, but then realized after I finally got up (couldn’t sleep because my nephew and niece don’t know how to be quiet upstairs) that I had missed an important phone call with a client. Not good.
I get on the phone with him and discover I have a boatload of work to do that I didn’t expect. Not good either.
Let me be clear, I feel like run-over dog sh*t at this point and wanted nothing more today than to just sleep this crap off. But I have to get some work done. What to do?
Action Steps To “Do Work Son”
Step one: Avoid the house.
I was already annoyed at the kids, but it’s not their fault and I don’t want to keep snapping at them or my brother. So I decide I’m going to go to the public library to get my work done. That’s step one.
Step two, was driving on the way to library and listening to an audio series called “50 Success Classics”. God decided to show me how big a punk I’ve been acting like because, as luck would have it, they’re going over the book “Shackletons Incredible Voyage”.
If you don’t know who Ernest Shackleton is, he is famous becauseĀ he led an expedition crew to Antartica and his ship was promptly crushed. Instead of giving up, he led his 20 something men across over 1,800 miles of uncharted arctic territory and kept ALL of them alive. That’s crazy awesome, badass and courageous. I decide after hearing this story to stop being such a big P*ssy and complaining about my one day of feeling bad. This gets me in the right “success mindset mood” for today.
Next, is getting myself “in shape” to be able to work with the help of some medicine. So I come up with this *great* idea to get me into working mode:
- Day-Quil to ease the body pain and aches (plus, the delayed onset muscle soreness from yesterday’s geniously done workout) and I picked up some night quil too to help put me to sleep tonight/later today…
- A Big bottle of fresh water to wash down the pills and chug because with my stopped up nose, sleeping has only turned my mouth into a parch desert and…
- A 16oz coffee. Black. For the needed caffeine kick to sharpen my focus and fight off any drowsiness that the medicine might give me.
I took the above concoction at about 1:30 ish today… and it’s now 4:00 and I’ve finished all the work I had to do AND I decided to write this blog post today for you even though I had just planned on NOT doing anything with the blog today.
But I’m glad I decided to “do work son” because after finishing all that work and building the habit of getting things done I hopped over here and made this blog post to keep the momentum going. That’s the funny thing about success — one completed task or step forward makes the next one easier and easier to take.
Anyways, hope the concoction above helps someone this “cold season”.

I love those old seafaring stories. Last spring I re-read one of my favorite books – Captains of Frigates. It’s a collection of the life stories of the boldest captains in the naval history. Good stuff buddy. It seems we enjoy the same stuff.
