Muscle Building Tips At Home

by Caleb Lee on August 25, 2008

Many people seem to think joining a gym is mandatory to get in shape and build muscle, but you’ll find that you can actually easily do this from home. It doesn’t take a gym to get involved in muscle building or strength training. There are many people who don’t have time to go to a gym and others don’t have the money to join, so exercising at home is the perfect choice.

If you are trying to work out at home and you’re focusing on muscle building, there are a variety of things that you can do to meet your goals. Here are a few great tips for muscle building that you can use if you’re working out at home…

Tip #1 – Avoid Expensive Equipment

First of all, if you’re working on muscle building at home, you need to avoid buying any expensive equipment. Sure, there may be some equipment that can help, but the equipment that advertises that you’ll only need 5 minutes to build muscle is just a waste of your money.

In fact, you could have a fully functional home gym and all you need is:

  • Some good free weights, such as an olympic barbell set…
  • Or you could get a set of kettlebells, which is about the same price (for two)…
  • A “power rack” for the barbell sets (even this isn’t completely neccessary)…
  • An “ab wheel” or exercise wheel…
  • A Pullup Bar in your doorway…
  • A jump rope…

That’s it! You can do all the exercises you need with just this little bit of equipment–and it won’t cost you much either! Then again, you don’t even need any equipment if you follow…

Tip #2 – Use Your Body Weight

Using your body weight can be important and helpful if you are working out at home as well. This is especially important if you are not using a lot of equipment (or you don’t want to buy any). Some of the best exercises using your body weight are bodyweight squats, pistols (one-legged squats), dips, pull ups, push ups, and chin ups as well.

Tip #3 – Don’t Get Distracted

Many people who work on muscle building at home find that it is very easy to get distracted when they are working out. Well, to avoid this, you need to make sure that you limit your distractions.

Consider finding a room that you can turn into a special home gym so you will have a good place to work out without any distractions. Also, turning on a helpful workout DVD can help to keep you motivated as well. Workout when everyone is gone as well, which can be a huge help.

Tip #4 – Get Professional Advice

If you’re not sure what things to do at home for muscle building, take the time to get some professional advice. The personal trainers at the gym might not be the best people to go to for advice (at my gym, most of them are 20lbs overweight). Reading the double your gains blog is good, I’ll give you all the info you need–and nothing you don’t. If you have questions, post them in the comments.
