Movement Always Beats Meditation

motion-beats-meditationOne of my business mentors was a man named Gary C. Halbert.

He was, among other things, a guy who after five straight years of failing at starting a mail order business, he finally had a big winner when he created one of the most mailed direct mail letters of all time–called the “coat of arms” letter.

When that business took off, he employed over 40 women, just to take the checks and money orders to the bank and make the daily deposits. This was in the late 60’s I believe — which means he was making an re-damn-dick-u-lous amount of money!

Anyways, one of the most important things I ever learned from him was this great saying:

“Movement always beats meditation”

Gary of course meant that instead of thinking about doing something … instead of planning to do something … instead of telling yourself “one day I’ll do such and such” … just get going and do it!

Any Movement Works

Here’s the thing: once you’ve decided on a direction to go in, then ANY movement works. You just gotta get started.

Example:

  • You want to lose weight …
  • Instead of telling yourself, “I’ll start that diet tomorrow” … you don’t eat those french fries today when you go to McDonald’s — you’re well on your way!
  • This one small step is getting the ball rolling. You’ve started the movement which is the hardest part! Now, you only need to keep the ball rolling by continuing in that direction every day (even if it’s only in small steps like not eating the french fries!)

Don’t Be Afraid of Wrong Movements

Now, in the example above, let’s pretend you started moving in the direction of your goal — i.e. losing weight — and you get side tracked.

Let’s say for instance, you can’t sleep one night and one of those commercials for a home exercise gym comes on late night T.V. and you plop down “6 easy payments of $39.95″ for it.

You just spent a whole bucket of fungolas on a big piece of exercise equipment which will probably end up being a clothes hanger in about six months.

But that’s ok! Because you’re going to make mistakes when you start moving towards your goals! In fact, you NEED to make some mistakes if you’re going to get anywhere because …

Mistakes Will Show You The Way!

A lot of times you won’t know how to get where you want to go. Continuing the example, you won’t know HOW to lose weight, you just know that you want to.

So that’s what you do, you start moving towards that goal and start making mistakes along the way. You find out low fat diets don’t work for you … ok, try a different way of eating … you find out you hate running … ok, try a different form of exercise … etc, etc.

It’s a continual process of:

  1. Keeping your eyes on the goal
  2. Trying stuff to get closer to it (movement)
  3. Re-adjusting according to whether each step is getting you closer or farther away from the goal!

It’s a simple three step process that works for achieving anything. The only thing you gotta do is start it. So remember, Motion ALWAYS beats meditation.

Beth, I completely agree. Caleb has been inspiring me for a long time now. It could be the way he smiles when encouraging me, the gentle look in his eyes, or the very slight pinches he gives my butt everytime I PR. I’m not sure which it is but know that he inspires in person just as well, if not better than he does one here… /ghey

@ Beth: Cool, glad to see it’s helping :)

@ Brucie: I’d say it’s 99% the slight butt pinches … but you never know … so that’s why I do it all :)
