Here’s a secret of getting things done when you’re hesitating, procrastinating, not looking forward to it, or otherwise stalling or trying to put off doing something … Just get started!
What I Go Through Every Morning.
Every morning the alarm goes off and I wake up … instantly think “It’s that time already?” … quickly go through reasons to stay in bed or sleep in … and then have to fight to get up.
Wanna know when it’s the hardest to get up?
When I lay there and think of reasons for why I shouldn’t get up … when I lay there and think of how tired I am … when I lay there and wonder how much more time I could sleep in … then it’s like pulling teethe to get me out of bed.
Just Get Going!
The times when it’s easiest getting up in the morning is when I hear the alarm ring, I immediately get up turn it off and step out of bed without thinking.
Then I walk over and open the shades on the windows, without thinking.
Then I reach over and turn on my laptop … again … without thinking.
Then I sit down to start typing the day’s blog post, no thinking required. I just get going.
Then what happens? Once the computer is on … once I start typing … I’m still a little tired, there’s stil a little fogginess, but I’ve already gotten started — and that makes everything MUCH easier!
Just Getting Started Makes Hard Things Easy.
There’s hardly anything in life that’s actually as bad as you imagine it beforehand! That’s a fact.
Many times, we waste energy considering what might happen, the “What ifs”, or by procrastination. When the easiest thing to do in most situations is just dive right in and before you know it you’ll be plugging away at the thing you thought was going to suck!
A Great Technique For Work Too!
This works great when you have a large amount of work to do.
Like the saying goes, “You eat an elephent one bite at a time” … so when you find yourself being overwhelmed with the amount of work you have on your plate … just jump in … get going … and you’ll find yourself being a lot happier and less stressed than if you sat around dreading it all day.
Final Thoughts …
I’m still not great at applying this 100% every single day … but life is an opportunity for practice … and every morning when that alarm goes off — I get the opportunity to practice — you should too

You got that right! Years ago, when I started a habit of getting up at 3:30 every morning to write for 2 hours before working out, I trained my mind to begin repeating “Don’t think…don’t think…don’t think” the moment the alarm went off. Sometimes, I repeated that mantra — to the exclusion of excuses or reasons to sleep in just this once (ha!) — until my computer was booted up and my document open. Worked great.
@ Tamara: that’s a great tip Tamara! I’ll try it also
You can also try masturbation. Works wonders…
