Increase Your Body Strength With These Tips

by Caleb Lee on March 17, 2009

increase-body-strength1Did you know there are only a few tips you need to know that can greatly increase your body strength — how strong you are in every muscle in your body?

This means when you know these tips you’ll be able to lift more weight in every single exercise you do!

It’s true, and I’m going to show you the strength secrets from some of the world’s strongest, most respected, most amazing, (most beautiful) and talented athletes ever in this article…

(for the record, the picture of the two girls play-fighting on the beach has NOTHING to do with this article… but they’re beautiful… and I love the beach… and I need more pictures like this on the blog :) )

MMA Fighter Says “Put Yo’ Ass In It!”

rampage-jackson1Rampage Jackson is a world class mixed martial arts fighter and he was on a t.v. show where they measure people’s punching power. Apparently, he has one of the hardest punches in the sport.

After he busted up their measurement machine the scientists were impressed and asking him how he hit the bag so hard. His answer? “I put my ass in it!”

And it’s the truth because the scientists showed how his punch started in his feet, he transferred his bodyweight and injury up his body and put his entire bodyweight behind each punch and that’s the reason it was so strong.

You can be stronger, more powerful and more athletic if you too learn to “put yo’ ass in it”. Here’s how:

  • Deadlifts and Squats, done correctly, will train you to use your posterior chain — mainly your glutes to move heavy loads.
  • Glute activation moves like the table maker will help you get your lazy bum into action again.
  • Learning how to put your hips into athletic movements will increase your speed and power in virtually any sport. Power moves like cleans, snatches, and swings are great for this…

Hot Famous Gymnast Says “Stay Tight!”

carly_pattersonActually, I don’t have any quotes from Carly Patterson… but she is a gymnast… and she sure is hot :)

And I’m not really worried about it because I’m sure her coach has yelled at her to “Stay tight” 1,000’s of times. That’s how gymnasts are able to develop such power for their jumps, twists and turns… and such strength for the bodyweight exercises like iron crosses and other high level strenght feats.

Why is it important to stay tight (at the correct time) for power and strength? Here’s an article from a gymnast article explaining the science behind it:

“First, let’s take a look at how a spring works. A good spring will take the energy transferred to compressing it and return almost all of it back from the direction it came. But because you’re not jumping directly on a spring, but rather a surface covering the spring, you only get a portion of the total energy. The good news is, it’s enough to give you the power you need in today’s gymnastics.

Now, here’s where you come in. You can think of your body as a spring as well — more specifically, your muscles are the springs (although theĀ info at this link is applied to dancers, but can work for gymnasts as well). Imagine that your body can take on two forms of springs: a Slinky, and a firm spring (like the ones in the springboard). When your body is loose, it acts like a Slinky — it only absorbs energy. It is limp and doesn’t return any energy back out. Now, think of your body as the firm spring when your body is tight and your muscles are squeezed. When you make impact with the floor (or springboard or beam), your muscles “compress” like a spring, transferring that energy into the springs of the floor. And when those springs expand again, that energy transfers back to your body and “expands” those “springs” to propel you into the air.”

I couldn’t have said it better myself, so if you’re wanting more strength make sure to stay tight. Keep your abs and glutes flexed when you’re pressing or pulling and your numbers will go up (even if it’s just lifting your own bodyweight).

Commy Bastard Says “Squeeze Comrade!”

Pavel Tsatsouline is a bad ass commy bastard. Actually, he’s a turn-coat capitalist pig now, but that’s cool with me because I like money… and… he teaches us Americans all his dirty soviet strength secrets.

One of those secrets is the principle of muscle irradiation — meaning the “The Sherrington Law of Irradiation” — How a hard-working muscle can cheerlead its neighbors into amplifying their strength.

pavel-irradiationBasically, Pavel gives the example of asking you to make a fist and squeeze it as hard as you can. Ok. Now do the same thing but also flex your arm at the same time and you notice you’re squeezing a little harder with your fist. Then next, flex your abs and squeeze your glutes together like you’re pinching a coin and you find your fist is squeezed extra, white-knuckled hard!

This is showing how your body is designed so that your other muscles help your working muscles be stronger. To put this to use:

  • Squeeze the bar as hard as possible in your presses and pulls, try to crush it in your grip.
  • When doing single leg squats (called pistols) grip the floor with your toes to activate more muscles in your legs…
  • Whenever pressing, pulling, squatting or trying anything else make sure to squeeze your abdominals tight and pinch your glutes together!

So there you have it: three tips you can use to increase your body strength almost immediately in any physical activity.

Good Article! I am sure you have noticed that most gymnasts (especially the male gymnasts) are ripped to shreds. And yet all they do is dip, pull(up), and push for hours at a time. They rarely lift weights. go to youtube.com and type in: “calisthenic kingz” and/or “bartendaz” and you will see what i mean. Now there is true strength and they have the bodies to show for it.

@ Al: no doubt man, and those bartendaz dudes are impressive — especially the one cat who is like 300 pounds doing all that stuff — impressive!

Very nice and useful. Thanks!
I wonder whether glute tightening should be a conscious act, or am I doing it already? Gotta check, but with a bar across my chest, it should be a little difficult, eh?

@ Rambo: yeah it should be conscious and if you’re referring to the bench press, make sure you get your feet behind your butt, a good arch in your back and drive your knees out to the sides and you’ll feel a significant, conscious tightening of your glutes — try it!
