How To Teach An Old Bencher New Squat Tricks …

by Caleb Lee on May 6, 2010

Stop doing this. Then keep reading to fix your already bad real squat.

The Squat is a technical lift … maybe … the most technical lift of all.

  • Chest should be up,
  • shoulders back and down,
  • elbows down,
  • lower back slightly arched,
  • sitting back into the squat,
  • weight on the midfoot/heels,
  • knees pressing out to the sides,
  • posterior chain loaded …

… And rebounding strong out of the hole … there’s a LOT to get right!

Here’s What Happens When You Start Doing It Right …

Instead of turning it into a “good morning” type exercise, like a lot of people do. Where you bend too far forward, like a table, like JABBA THE BENCH was prone to doing (no pun intended!)

You start doing it right and you send your friend the following after a hard squat workout, via text:

JABBA THE BENCH: Somethings wrong. There’s this achey feeling in my thighs. Its like the same feeling my back usually has after squat day but for some reason it’s in my legs …

ME: Ohmygod! I think u might actually have “propersquatitis” disease! It usually shows up when u focus on doing exercises like the squat correctly for a few weeks!

JABBA THE BENCH: Oh no! I have heard of this! The only cure I know of is “roundbackitol”!

ME: To be honest i caught propersquatitis when I first started. The symptoms r easy to deal with: confidence. self respect. posterior chain development. I’d just keep it if I were you!

JABBA THE BENCH: I just may. I hear it’s one of those which the cure is as bad as the disease. Without the pounding ache in my lower back how will I know I’m helping my Deadlift tho?

ME: Yes that’s one of the first symptoms – ur squat ceases to be an accessory exercise for ur deadlift and becomes its own lift!

I agree with you that the squat is a very complicated lift, you may even go so far as to say that it is one of the most commonly miss preformed lifts there is. This being said, I disagree that it is the most complicated. I would have to say that he snatch, power clean, and hang clean are all more complicated.

Sorry for the lateness of this post, just found your site.

PS. I'm all about squatting, if you want to gains in many of the common lifts, squatting is the answer.

I have been coming back to this site more often lately and I have a question. I am 205 lbs, 6'3" and I feel that I have a really wide stance when I squat. I feel the "burn" on the inside of my legs, not so much my quads. I am trying to get my @$$ to the grass, but I feel like my form is trash. I can box squat proper for reps and sets, but straight up proper squating eludes me. Help.
