How To Get a Flat Tummy

how-to-get-a-flat-tummyIf you want to know how to get a flat tummy, then this article will show you how in two ways. One, I’ll show you why what you’ve been doing isn’t working. And then, two, I’ll show you what does work to flatten your stomach.

Sidenote: It’s funny how men and women talk about things differently. Men say “I want ripped abs”. Women say, “I want to get a flat tummy”. Men wonder why they can’t understand women, and women wonder why men never listen — maybe we just all need to start talking the same :) haha, just a random thought.

Ab Exercises Are NOT The Answer

What you’re probably doing now to flatten your stomach is a lot of ab exercises, am I right? Well, it’s not working for a reason…

You see, the fat covering your “tummy” is not going to get burned away if all you do is Ab Workouts. It may seem like you’re really “working” that area… that you’re getting “the burn”… and that it should work that way, but it’s just not how it works.

When you do exercises that stimulate fat burning, your body doesn’t just burn the fat off of the one area of muscle you did the exercises with — it uses your entire body’s fat stores from all over. So doing ab exercises isn’t going to flatten your stomach any better than other exercises.

You will get pretty strong abs this way, and build a little muscle there too, so you’ll have a nicer looking stomach when the fat is gone — but that’s the key — you need to burn away the fat FIRST… or you’ll never see those abs.

So what type of workout routines SHOULD you be doing to burn fat off your abs?

Diet Is Most Important

Before I get into the workout routines you should be doing, I think it’s important to re-emphasize the saying “you can’t out-work the dinner table” which means no matter how hard you work in the gym, no matter how many fat burning pills you take, you won’t lose fat if you can’t control what goes in your mouth.

So it always comes back to eating less calories than your body burns each day to lose weight. This applies to stomach fat as well because when you lose fat all over you lose it on your stomach too.

Does this mean you have to count calories? No! For most people, just eating clean and watching what you eat is enough to make you lose weight. Deciding to stop eating anything processed, out of a box, and cutting out all drinks with calories is enough. Even if your activity levels are REALLY high (like someone who runs a marathon every day or something) it’s still a great idea to eat clean when you do eat (even if it’s 10,000 calories per day) because eating a lot of trans fats, etc isn’t great for your overall health and it’ll show up in your blood work, etc.

A Bit About Exercise.

Now that you’re doing the right thing when you’re out of the gym each week (which is actually 80% of the time), we can focus on what you’re doing inside the gym.

Your exercise routines should feature two things:

  1. Strength Training – because you need to preserve any lean muscle you have and building a little is NOT going to turn you into a gross “huge hulk-like bodybuilder” and it is going to speed your metabolism a little and help you stay lean easier, make you stronger for every day life, they’re the Best Glutes Exercises, etc…
  2. Interval Cardio – instead of being a treadmill bunny, the type of person who pounds away on the cardio machines for hours upon hours with no results — you should do  Interval Training instead and get your cardio workouts done in 12 minutes or less.
