How To Be a Genius At Anything You Desire

by Caleb Lee on June 19, 2009

being-geniusDo you want to know the secret to being a genius … how to literally be a “genius” at anything you desire?

How to have instant respect, fame, even fortune because people see you’re so talented that they regard you as a “genius” whenever they speak of you?

If so, then this is the one big secret you have been looking for …

“Wait! You Have To Be Born A Genius! Right?”

That’s what most people would have you believe!

Most people, average people, believe (and want YOU to believe) that you’re stuck where you are in life — that you’re either born a genius or you’re not.

That genius … or success … or being good at something … or being a “natural” … is something you’re BORN with — that it cannot be taught.

But is this really true?

Let’s Look At a Genius

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

Almost everyone you talk to refers to Mozart as a “born genius” when it came to making beautiful music. What’s more: almost everyone you talk to about the skill of music believes it is something you have to “have a talent for” if you’re going to be successful with it.

People use Mozart all the time as the ultimate example of the “born with it” theory of genius and success.

“Composing music at age five, giving public performances at age eight, going on to produce hundreds of works, some of which are widely regarded as ethereally great and treasures of Western culture, all in the brief time before his death at age 35. If that isn’t talent, on a mammoth scale, then nothing is.”

That’s a quote from, Geoff Colvin, who wrote a book called Talent is Overrated (which I just now ordered from Amazon.com)

Colvin goes on to tear the popular assumption apart:

  • Mozart’s father was a Leopold, a famous composer and performer himself …
  • Mozart’s father enrolled his son in a “home boot camp” of performing and composing at age 3 …
  • Leopold was obsessed with how to teach music to children, and had already published a book on the subject in 1756 …
  • Mozart’s early compositions were “corrected” (by all accounts, read: rewritten) by his dad before they were released–and many were not original anyway …
  • Mozart’s first recognized “masterpiece” was done when he was 21. Colvin says, “That’s certainly an early age, but we must remember that by then Wolfgang had been through eighteen years of extremely hard, expert training.“This is worth pausing to consider. Any divine spark that Mozart may have possessed did not enable him to produce world-class work quickly or easily, which is something we often suppose a divine spark will do.”

The Bottom Line: Genius Is ALWAYS Learned!

Nobody was ever born a genius.

Nobody ever overcame mediocraty or being average by not trying.

Every time you look at someone right now and think “oh, he’s so lucky because he was born with …” you are fooling yourself!

As the saying goes, the grass is always greener on the other side.

“But Aren’t Some People “Naturally” Better At Some Things?”

Yes, it seems, some of us are born with natural “strengths” or maybe our mind’s function in a certain way more easily, so that certain tasks come “easier” to us.

But if you just leave it at that, without hard work, without dedication, without persistance towards a goal — you will never amount to anything!

You have to:

  • Set you goals high–you have to think BIG …
  • You have to set off towards those goals immediately, and take steps to reach them now …
  • Finally, and most importantly, you must PERSEVERE until you reach those goals …

PERSEVERANCE — That’s How Winning Is Done!

Consider this great quote, and then I’ll let you get back to becoming a genius yourself:

“Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not. Nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not. Unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not. The would is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.”

– Calvin Coolidge

Hello Caleb,

Stuart McRobert once wrote, " The bedrock of success in the gym is the triumvirate of progression, performance and persistence." This statement can be applied to life in general. Thank you, Caleb for the great article.

thanks for this article, caleb, appreciate it…i actually have what would generally be considered "talent" or "potential" in a number of different things, and a lot of people have repeatedly tried to push me in those directions, but i haven't been able to achieve anything till now due to my lack of motivation and determination…if i could've capitalized on my natural strengths all these years, i would probably be somewhere better now (although i'm just 23 and there's still some hope)…tragic
