There are literally 1,000’s of foods out there… probably even 100’s of thousands… so instead of listing a bunch of healthy foods (and I might do that in the future) — here are some healthy food ideas.
In other words, if you have any questions about what you’re about to eat — whether it’s healthy or not — then just consider these ideas or “guidelines” if you will.
1. Would a Caveman Have Access To It?
One of the easiest ways to separate out “healthy” v.s. “unhealthy” foods is to just ask yourself “Would a caveman have access to this food?”
Before modernization, before farming, before any of that stuff people were hunters and gatherers. We survived for long hours, even days without a lot of food. Just water, some nuts, berries and other stuff we could find while trekking through jungles and whatnot.
Then we’d get hungry, decide we needed to kill an animal and get some meat. It might take hours, but eventually we’d find one — chase it down — kill the little bugger and get piles of meat. Everyone would sit around the campfire, eat some meat and tell stories about how Ugg can’t hit the broad side of a cave with his spear.
OR… some other animal had recently gotten murdered by a bigger animal, and we could jump in there and pick through the remains of the animals. That probably happened too (I have a feeling cavemen were pretty lazy too).
Either way:
- Lots of nuts berries and some leafy green stuff throughout the day…
- Undereating for long periods of time…
- Then a big meal with lotsa meat and fat…
2. Did It Come In a Box Or Other Package?
There’s not a lot of stuff that comes in a box or other packaging that’s actually healthy for you. In fact, I can’t think of a single thing.
Going by our example above, if a caveman didn’t have access to it, you probably shouldn’t eat it. So no breakfast cereals, no pre-packaged foods, microwavable dinners, etc
All those foods are so packed full of sweeteners, chemicals to keep them fresh, and processed that there’s hardly any real “substance” to them. I think that’s why it’s so easy to overeat with these foods.
That’s why you can finish a microwave dinner and still be hungry, then go searching for a bag of chips to devour, and you’ll be able to eat that too. There’s nothing there but empty calories, nothing satisfying your body. Contrast that to killing a 10ozĀ steak. You KNOW you just ate something.
3. Was It Created By a Man?
I’ll close with this final tip. There’s some stuff that seems pretty natural and healthy, because it doesn’t come in a box, but I’d argue that you don’t need much (if any) of it.
This is stuff I’d say was created by a man. Stuff like bread, pasta and rice. These things weren’t around until the last few hundred–thousands years when humans started farming stuff.
Like boxed foods there’s really not a whole lot of nourishment in these foods too. Everyone knows the saying “eat Chinese and you’re hungry again an hour later” because there’s really not a lot these foods do for your body.
They go in, they spike some insulin levels, your blood sugar crashes, you get super hungry again and you reach for more food.
Instead, eat more satiating “good” fats. Avoid the trans fats in fast food burgers, deep-fried french fries and the like, and enjoy natural healthy saturated fats in large amounts (found naturally) in red meat and foods like avocados. You’ll feel fuller longer, and you’ll teach your body to start using fat for fuel.
I hope this short article gives you a couple good guidelines as to some more healthy food ideas.
