Focus ONLY On What You Want!

by Caleb Lee on March 16, 2009

Today, I’m going to share with you another tip for massive success not just for health and fitness… but for any area of your life that you may want to improve.

focus-only-on-what-you-want1If you…

  • Want to lose weight or gain muscle…
  • Want to improve the quality (or quantity) of your romantic relationships…
  • Make more money or start a business…
  • Become a world-class athlete…

Or want to achieve virtually anything else, then you’re going to want to know this one, simple, commonly overlooked (or erroneously executed) tip…

If you get just this ONE thing, your success in virtually any area of your life is almost certainly guaranteed.

What’s more: if you don’t “fix” this about yourself — you’ll NEVER get the life, results or outcomes that you want… and… you’ll always be disappointed with your life.

Focus ONLY on what you want!

Most people don’t realize how important their focus is when it comes to achieving their goals. Do you?

Did you know that your mind is literally a “cybernetic” goal-achieving mechanism? That every single moment of every single day you are giving it instructions on where you want it to focus, and what you would like in your life.

It’s true: what you tell your mind to focus on is what you eventually get in your reality. If you input your goals (i.e. the things you want) you will eventually get them… if you input your fears (i.e. the things you don’t want), you will get them too! As computer programmers and engineers say: “garbage in, garbage out”.

What Are You Focusing On Now?

(I’m going to use your financial situation for this example).

Right now, you are F*cked when it comes to the “input” that is bombarding you every single day from the media, celebrities, respected figures in politics, and even your friends and family about your financial situation and the economy.

How many episodes of the nightly news have you watched lately… when the only the thing you heard reported on was the “doom and gloom” of the recession?

How many episodes of political speeches have you watched lately where the focus was only on how many people are losing jobs… losing money… and doing poorly in these times?

How many conversations have you engaged in with family and friends and said stuff like… “yeah, everyone is doing bad right now”… “yup, well because of the recession” … “I’m worried I might get laid off/fired/need to find another “safe job”"…

All that is “garbage in”. You’re inputting financial garbage into your mind every single time you engage in those conversations… watch political speeches… or listen to the nightly news.

And what you’re experiencing in your life right now is probably a direct reflection of that fact.

How To Change Your Focus…

Here’s a fact: the only economy that matters is YOUR personal economy — which can have nothing to do with the world economy.

I know people right now, personally, who have grown their businesses over 1,000% ALL within the last year and this present year. During this “recession”. When people are supposedly not buying things. They do it because they’re focused on making their business profitable… not the “bad stuff” in the economy:

  • Instead of watching doom and gloom T.V. — they’re reading business and success books.
  • Instead of complaining to their friends and family about “how bad” everything is — they’re “masterminding” about how to make more money and marketing ideas…
  • Instead of focusing on how little money is in their bank accounts, they’re figuring out new ways to add more value to their products and services to profit more from each transaction with their customers…

I also know people (VERY personally. Like multiple family members.) who had to close their business doors and scramble to find a job. In the very same times.

  • They watch T.V.
  • They don’t realize newscasters believe “if it bleeds, it leads” (meaning ANY bad news story will get more viewership than a good news story).
  • They don’t remember that the last depression in the U.S. created more millionaires than at any other time in history…
  • They complain to their friends and family about how bad everything is…
  • Then instead of looking for ways to change their situation (focusing on what they WANT)… they focus on how bad the business is doing and the dwindling numbers in their bank accounts.

How to Apply This Concept To Anything

Let’s talk about your diet.

You decide to eat low carb. So anything with sugar is definitely NOT on the “eat that” list. Let me ask you some questions:

  • Are you going to go drive by the donut shop every day?
  • Are you going to walk into the donut shop, buy a donut, and carry it around with you all day, smelling the deliscious fresh baked smell of a sugary, donut?
  • Are you going to call up your friend and talk about how much you want to eat that donut?
  • Are you going to turn on the T.V. and watch nothing but “101 Most Decadent Desserts” on the Food T.V. Network and lick your lips at all the sugary treats they make?

How long do you think it would take you before you cave in and start eating everything you’ve been seeing. Donuts, cakes, etc? Minutes? Hours?

Are you getting what I’m saying? If you want to succeed at eating low carb… succeed at living a healthy lifestyle… you need to change your focus!

  • Instead of visiting the donut shop, you develop a love for coffee and go to that shop instead…
  • At the coffee shop you spend your time thinking about trying each and every flavor and brew available (instead of trying every sugary scone, muffin or cookie they have)…
  • Instead of calling your friend and talking about how much you want a donut, you kick around different ways to cook ground beef to make a delicious meal for dinner…
  • Instead of turning on the T.V. and watching the food channel… you pick up a book at the library on how to become a culinary genius when it comes to low carb cooking…

Do you see what you’re doing? You’re changing your focus!

I don’t care how smart you think you are — if you’re only focusing on one or two things — you don’t have enough brain power to focus on anything else.

So when you fill your head with thoughts of HOW to accomplish your new goal… WAYS to accomplish it… and LOOK for even more efficient/better/more enjoyable ways to get what you WANT… you have NO ROOM for any opposing thoughts.

You won’t need “will power” at this point to stick to your new diet because there is no battle at this point. You don’t even realize a reality exists that’s different than your current low carb diet one. Because you’ve already accepted it, moved beyond it and are focused on what you want!

Be Careful of How You Talk/Think!

I’ll briefly mention this now and maybe do a full article on it later because it’s VERY important. The way you talk to yourself is key — you always want to be talking to yourself in a way that supporst what you WANT in life.

First, you just need to catch yourself when you’re doing “self talk” that’s not helping you get what you want. Using the financial example above, here’s a simple one for most people.

“Poor” is a state of being that’s permanent. Poor people stay that way, without money, forever. “Broke” can be a temporary state of being — most millionaires today were “broke” multiple times in their life.

Just consciously realizing this and changing your self talk and speech patterns to saying “no, I’m not going to go do that because I’m so poor”… to… “No, I’m not going to go do that because I’m a little “broke” right now, but I’ll have some money soon”…

This is a small example, but it’s very powerful. Here’s another:

If you keep saying to yourself, “I’m fat and I’m trying to lose weight” it’ll be much harder to lose weight. Why not try something more powerful like “I’m concerned about my health and each and every day I’m starting to look better and better because I’m losing so much weight”

Some Quick, Closing Tips…

So in closing. Keep this in mind:

  • Avoid Bad Input: from other sources first (T.V., friends, media, family, etc)
  • Avoid Bad Self Talk: from yourself
  • Change associations: instead of “I’m fat” — “how can I get thinner?” (changes your focus to a more positive frame).

Put the tips in this short article to work for you today, and I guarantee you’ll see a change in your life that’s nearly miraculous in the next few months!

I believe another point you are trying to make is that we care too much about what other people think. before starting a diet or exercise program i used to ask my friends and family what they thought about a certain diet or exercise program. THAT IS COMPLETELY FOOLISH. THE ONLY APPROVAL YOU NEED ON ANYTHING (especially diet and exercise) IS YOUR OWN!!!!!!!!
Focus on what you want to achieve and not what somebody else thinks you should achieve. Great article!

@ Al: That’s great Al, you’re right and I’ll probably do a whole nother’ post on just that point alone. It’s so idiotic but people do what you said you used to do all the time. Like that tip I gave for how to not use your lower back on the deadlift (http://doubleyourgains.com/deadlift-lower-back-pain-how-to-start-the-deadlift-with-your-legs-and-hips-not-your-lower-back ) I found a forum post on a crossfit forum where some guy was like, “found this article… what do you guys think?” before even trying it. When if he just grabbed a f*cking barbell and tried it (and it would take 5 seconds) he would immediately know if the tip worked or not.

Bottom line: most people are sheep and they need EVERYONE’s approval around them before they’ll do anything to change their situation or try something new.

Great comment Al — now you got me all riled up :)

This reminds me a lot of the Secret. Some people think it's not true, but basically all it is.
What you visualize, and what you think about, are normally what you get.
Garbage in, garbage out.
If you focus on something you don't want to happen, and it happens, you get all confused!
But the secret is visualizing good outcomes, thinking about good things, and being positive.
Readers digest version:
Think positive.
