Fitness Goal Setting And How To Achieve Your Goals

by Caleb Lee on October 13, 2008

You probably already know the importance of fitness goal setting. You know you should have a specific goal you want to reach… the question then becomes “how do I achieve that goal?”

Good question!

It’s been said that…

“90% Of Success Is Just Showing Up”

And it’s true, consistency is one of the most overlooked attributes to success. The guy that never gives up usually ends up getting what he wants.

The best part is consistency works with baby steps. You don’t have to start hitting the gym 5 days a week to see results. Just small, consistent steps each day will get you towards your goals…

For example: You want to lose some weight? Consistently, every morning get up and walk for 20 minutes. That could be a walk around your block a couple times. You don’t even have to break a sweat. You’ll burn some calories, not much, but if you’re consistent–it adds up!

No matter what, rain or shine, just walk those 20 minutes. You’ll start losing weight.

How To Become More Consistent

Stop thinking “long term” and focus only on the present moment. Because when you think about it, the present moment is ALL THERE IS. The Past is gone and the future doesn’t even exist yet. So don’t worry about either.

Using my example above, Don’t think “20 minutes of walking every single day? I’ll never be able to do that! I’ll never be able to keep that up!” You’re focusing too much on the long term.

Just focus on today. Make a decision “today I’ll walk those 20 minutes no matter what. I can do that. No need to worry about tomorrow”.

This tip will help you get through any grueling workout or situation by the way, focusing on just getting through the next minute is an achievable goal for anyone. Alcoholics Anonymous has used this technique for years–the “one day at a time” approach.

Think Of Everything As Practice

This is a mindset shift that is really becoming useful for me. Think of everything as practice. Every week day I get up and write this blog, first thing I do.

When I think of writing this blog long term, every day, it overwhelms me. But when I make a decision to simply “practice” writing every day on this blog. And only think of today’s post –that’s when it becomes easy!

Just make a commitment for one day, each day, and you’ll find yourself effortlessly achieving your fitness goals.

If you’d like a tool for setting your goals, you can use this web application:

http://www.Gtdagenda.com

You can use it to manage your goals, projects and tasks, set next actions and contexts, use checklists, schedules and a calendar.
A mobile version and iCal are available too.

Great article Caleb.

90% of the problem is just showing up. If people can begin to do the things to lose weight they will lose weight.
I am a firm believer that thoughts follow action and if someone takes action to skip rope or jog or walk or ride a bicycle their thoughts will catch up with their actions and it will become a habit.

Thanks for you insight. I will spread your good news.
