Do certain exercises burn fat?
Given what’s happened the last few months … I’m almost inclined to think that fat burning exercises are a myth.
In this short post, I’ll tell you why …
What Are Commonly Known As “Fat Burning Exercises”?
When I speak of fat burning exercises … or … when other people talk about them, they’re usually talking about:
- Cardio – in all its forms, long distance running, interval training, etc …
- Circuit Training — with weights or dumbbells, odd implements, or machines …
- Dance & Aerobics — which I’ve never done, but we’ll throw them in the list too
More importantly …
Why Do I Think They’re a Myth?
Because I haven’t done ANY of them in the last 3-4 months … and … I’m within (guesstimating here) about 1-2% of the bodyfat that I was while doing them after every workout.
You see, I used to do some type of cardio after every strength training session 3x per week. And then on my “off” days, the other 2 days of the standard M-F work week — I’d do additional cardio.
Now, for the last 3-4 months or so, I’m not doing any of that. In fact, I’ve cut the total amount of work I do in each workout down quite a bit.
I’m on a REALLY abbreviated strength training program focusing on only the powerlifts — the squat, bench, and deadlift … and … not much else. (I throw in a little ab and lower back training because I tweaked my lower back about a year ago and would like to keep it from happening again)
What’s More Important Than The Exercises?
So what changed? Was all that extra working out for nothing before? Not exactly …
One thing that I HAVE been doing is not drinking so much beer. I used to drink a LOT of beer on a weekly basis. In addition, I’ve been pretty consistent with following The Perfect Muscle Building, Fat Burning Diet Plan.
So I think that’s why I’ve been able to stay so lean, so easily, even though I’m not doing a single “fat burning exercise” with my time.
Something To Think About …
Just look at it this way: if you eat a slice of dominoes pepporoni pizza you’ve just consumed 324 calories in a couple bites … a maximum of what? A minute of eating?
If you weighed 190 pounds, you’d have to walk for 1 whole hour — at 4.0 miles per hour (a rather brisk pace) to burn 345 calories!
Lesson Learned? Controlling what goes in your mouth maybe the easiest way to stay lean … not looking for the “best fat burning exercises”.

Have to agree with you. I’ve been sticking to the powerlifts as well, with some snatches and cleans thrown in. I jump rope once or twice a week, some planks and cable woodchoppers for abs once or twice a week and that’s it. It’s all about what you eat and how much of it. I’ve had fantastic success just doing the above.
What they say is true. Nutrition and eating habits are 80% of the journey.
