Build Muscle Strength Easily With These 3 Rules

by Caleb Lee on October 16, 2008

To build muscle strength is not very hard. It comes down to following some basic, simple rules. The rules won’t always be “easy” but they are simple!

If you’ve read my article on strength training then you have an idea of what’s involved. But if you’re looking for even more specific information on how to build muscle strength, and what guidelines to follow to achieve this, then you’re going to love this article.

Rule #1: Tension = Strength

Strength is increased when tension is increased. The more tension you develop the more strength you develop. Here’s how you develop tension:

  • When lifting weights, lift heavy (80-90% 1RM) to increase resistance which increases tension…
  • When lifting your bodyweight, decrease your leverage to increase resistance/tension…
  • Take advantage of your body’s high tension techniques (actively flex your muscles)…
  • Lift lighter weights (60-80% 1RM) explosively because you develop tension to control the weight…

Put simply, the more tension you are able to develop the more strength you will develop

Rule #2: Fatigue Is The Enemy

The more fatigue you accumulate the less tension you can develop. The more your form breaks down the less chance you’re doing exercises right and the more chance of an injury there is. Here’s some tips to manage fatigue:

  • Stick to low reps and sets
  • Take adequate rest periods…
  • Rarely (if ever) lift to failure…
  • Stay mentally focused…

The point of working out isn’t to “feel like crap” afterwards… the point is to build muscle strength. In order to do that you must focus on the result you want and avoid fatigue.

Rule #3: More Muscles Used = More Strength

The more muscles you tense, the more strength you’ll develop. Here’s how to use more muscles:

  • Do multi-joint/compound exercises almost exclusively (DoubleYourGains’ 3-5 Program is a good start)…
  • Use high tension techniques because it tenses other muscles to stabilize…
  • Do most exercises on your own two feet because more stabilizing muscles are used…

Follow these three rules to build muscle strength and you’ll be well on your way to building a strong body in no time flat.
