Best Muscle Gain Exercise?

If you’re wondering what the best muscle gain exercise is, then you’ll like this article. Actually, it COULD make you mad :) Why? Because I’m not just going to give you one muscle gain exercise–I’m going to give you TWO!

Why Two Exercises?

A couple reasons. With two exercises you can get (theoretically) alternate them throughout the week so you don’t get bored, stall, or overwork the same movement patterns “too much”.

Plus, the two exercises I’m about to show you work along almost the same movement patterns — so having a good way to “switch them up” a little gives your Central Nervous System a break.

What Makes a Good Muscle Gain Exercise?

If you want an exercise to help you gain muscle, the exercise has to fulfill some qualifications:

  • Allow you to use high resistance – you should be able to move a lot of weight for optimum muscle stimulation…
  • Uses your whole body — the more muscles the exercise uses the more stimulation…
  • Involves your legs — this goes with the second one, but basically your legs are the largest muscles you have, you need to make sure you work them…

So, if you’re a regular reader of my blog, you probably know what I’m going to suggest next…

Muscle Gain Exercise #1: Deadlift

Some people would put the squat above the deadlift for muscle gains… but I slightly prefer the deadlift over the squat for the following reasons:

  • More weight — most people can deadlift more than they can squat…
  • More muscles – because you’re also pulling with your back, the deadlift works your back and posterior chain more than squats…

Makes sense right? You’re increasing your resistance (higher weights) and using more musculature to do it for optimal stimulation.

Make sure you focus on squeezing your glutes and pushing through the ground with your powerful “posterior chain” — make sure you read my how to deadlift page for more info.

Muscle Gain Exercise #2: Squat

The squat is world renowned for its muscle gain qualities. The 20 rep squat routine is legendary for its ability to make skinny guys gain weight. You can move a lot of weight, your core stabilizes and of course your legs do the majority of the work. It’s darn near perfect.

One thing though: Make sure you go below parallel. Your hip bone goes below your knee joint. This is different than the bottom of your hamstrings becoming “parallel” with the ground. Read my how to squat page for more info.
