If you’re like most gym rats, your probably don’t wonder about the best back strength exercise. You’re probably more concerned about how to get your chest or your arms bigger.
That’s a shame!
A strong back makes a strong man!
Warriors in the past needed strong backs to shoulder shields and spears… wrestle opponents in war and peace… kill animals and eat them… and ravage beautiful women.
You need a strong back too. You might not be doing warrior stuff (except hopefully ravaging beautiful women) but at the very least lower back pain is an epidemic in developed countries these days… and constantly working your chest and arms with no direct back strength exercises will NOT make the problem any better.
So what’s the best back strength exercise?
The Deadlift. Bar None.
Why? Glad you asked:
- The Deadlift trains you to keep your back rigid against a heavy load.
- It trains you to pick heavy stuff up off the floor and not hurt yourself.
- It strengthens ALL the muscles of your posterior chain and back.
- It strengthens and builds more quality, thick, strong muscle on your back than any other exercise.
Plus you can’t cheat!
It’s almost impossible to cheat when doing deadlifts. If a guy can says he can bench 500lbs… but his “spotter” is lifting half of it–it’s questionable.
If you can deadlift 500lbs, no matter how you get it from the ground to locking your knees — it takes strength. So you can be proud when you deadlift heavy because you really ARE strong. The deadlift is an awesome exercise. Make sure you’re doing it.
For help, read my checklist article to make sure you’re doing it right. And get started doing the best back strength exercise there is — the deadlift.
