I‘ve never had to worry about how I look. I’ve been training in martial arts since I was 5. I started doing hard-core strength and conditioning routines since I was 12 years old.
But I meet people who don’t look the way they want, and every time they open their mouth, it’s like hearing the same stories over and over again. That’s why I am writing this post, if you are…
- Skinny and think you can’t put on muscle…
- Fat and think you can’t lose the weight…
- “skinny fat” where you have no muscularity, but you’re just skinny…
Then I can guarantee you are this way because of one of these 5 things:
Reason #1: You Don’t Have Specialized Knowledge
- You don’t know how to build strength.
- You don’t know how to lose fat.
- You don’t know how to eat clean
- You don’t know how to cook, so you only eat fast food and food out of a box.
- You don’t know which training program is best.
Knowledge is always the first step. The first thing you need to realize is how your body works, how proper nutrition and exercise changes the animal — then you discover how to make it do what you want it to do. In your case: change your physique for the better–build muscle and lose fat.
That’s why you’re here. I will give you the knowledge you need. But it’s up to you to apply it. Knowledge is NOT power, only APPLIED knowledge is power.
Reason #2: You Are Lazy
- You know how to build muscle but you don’t want to put in the work.
- You know how to build strength, but you think it’s “too much work”.
- You know how to burn fat, but you make excuses like “I don’t have the time!”
- You know how to eat clean, but it’s easier to eat junk food and microwave box food
I’m a big fan of being what I call ambitiously lazy. That is, I find the very best ways (specialized knowledge) to get the maximum results I want in the minimum time. So I get in, get it done, and get out. You have to EARN the right to be lazy.
You can read every book on the planet about building muscle and losing fat, but if you never start exercising and eating clean then you’ll never get ANY results. You have to take action. Don’t be afraid of failure, the most successful people realize that their entire life is one big mistake!
Reason #3: You Accept Yourself As “Skinny” or “Fat” or “Not Muscular”
- You think of yourself as “skinny, fat or not muscular” instead of as what you want to be
- It doesn’t bother you much that you’re this way anymore
- If you really cared enough, if it bothered you enough, you’d change
- You’re COMFORTABLE with your appearance.
Being fat or out of shape is considered normal these days. It wasn’t always like this. We used to be hunters and if you weren’t in shape–you were dead–end of story. During the industrial age everyone survived on hard physical labor, everyone was in shape and athletic.
You were considered “sickly” if you were skinny and not muscular… or ridiculed for being fat. You shouldn’t feel bad about yourself but don’t just say “this is just the way I am”. You can become whatever you want to become and achieve things you never thought you could achieve… if… you’re sick and tired of your current situation and want to change bad enough.
Reason #4: You Think Gaining Muscle and Burning Fat is hard
- You accept terms like “hardgainer” and apply them to you
- You don’t get results in 2 weeks, so you quit
- You read books and magazines that talk about “battling the bulge” like it’s hard
Building muscle isn’t all that hard. If you’ve always been skinny, try to get strong. Your body MUST adapt by building muscle to help you get stronger. It’s the way your body works.
Losing fat isn’t hard either. You eat clean and you stay active. Anyone who says they can’t find 12 minutes a day 3x per week to lose fat is lying to themselves.
Reason #5: You Aren’t Determined Enough
- You haven’t said “hell or high water”
- You haven’t told yourself “failure is not an option”
- You haven’t made up your mind yet that “this is the year I get this sh*t handled!”
The truth is: You can build muscle, burn fat, and reshape your body using just about ANY exercise routine and nutritional program. That’s the reason why there’s so many of them out there. The key to success (ANY success) boils down to 2 things:
- Make up your mind you’re going to do something and
- F*cking Do it NO MATTER WHAT
I used to train with methods I wouldn’t use now. They’re not “proper” but it WORKED because I refused to take failure as an option. If you too develop the “do or die” attitude, you can achieve anything.
I will give you the knowledge — or you can get it elsewhere. I like to think I know the fastest, smartest, most efficient ways to do it — but you can get the knowledge you need from anyone. And you don’t need to be all that “positive” in your thinking. Just make up your mind to do something and find a way to get it done.

why my body make a stretch mark in body by exercise
Gurmeet,
Your body gets stretch marks because your muscles grow faster than your skin can “keep up”. In other words your muscles get bigger faster than your skin can stretch and that leads to essentially “micro tears” in your skin, that show up as stretch marks.
The good news: they tend to fade with time… although how much they will fade is not certain.
Best,
Caleb
Hey Caleb – you are spot on with this. All 5 of your reasons are mental. Whether your goal is to lose weight, gain weight, develop lean muscle mass, bulk up, run a marathon, or anything else that is a physical challenge, you first have to do it mentally. Thanks for the reminders!
Caleb, this might be the best article you could have ever written. If I only had one chance, one article to read to motivate, inspire, and instruct me on my diet and health (or success in general) this would be it. I have emailed you numerous time with multiple questions i had on the topics diet and training, BUT THIS ARTICLE TRULY ANSWERS ANY QUESTIONS ONE MAY HAVE ON THE SUBJECT OF DIET, TRAINING, AND SUCCESS AS A WHOLE. I strongly encourage you to repost this article again (on your main page) so new veiwers of this site can see that this is the only article they would ever need to read, EVER! THANK YOU SO MUCH!
@ Al: thanks man! I actually email a link to this for people when they sign up to my email series, but yeah, maybe I should highlight it a bit more. You’re very welcome

@ Liam: Awesome dude. Glad you got started. I’m 99% sure I’m going to go to Thailand this May to do Muay Thai Training too! Except, I’m pretty sure we’re going to go to Tiger Muay Thai in Phuket. How do you like your camp so far?
I’ve always been a small framed girl. I’m now 53 years old and my calves will never grow. They are rediculously small. The more I try to exercise them the smaller and tighter they get. I can’t go to the gym to use their leg machines so all I can do is raise up and down on my toes. What do you think I can do to make my calves grow? My toes start hurting when I try to go up and down enough to think I might be making some progress. Help me. Thanks so much. Dona
Hi, I’m 53 years old and I’m 5′ 5″ tall and weigh 125lbs. I’ve always been kind of thin except my belly. I don’t really have much trouble building muscle in my upper body (arms and chest) but I find it hard to lose my belly fat. I also have very skinny legs. I’ve tried to build my calves by going up and down on my toes. If I do that too many times my toes start to hurt. I can’t go to the gym to workout (my husband) so thats all I know to do. When I do exercise my calves they just tighten up and get smaller. What else can I do? Please help me. I would love to wear dresses and shorts in the summer but I am to embarassed. Thank you for your opinion. Dona
